Girls and boys will be ready or summer in sunny yellow clothes. Follow these tips and suggestions.

Saffron, mustard, banana – these aren’t ingredients in a cookbook, they’re several of the many shades of yellow that are popping up in summer 2008 fashion. No longer considered tacky or gaudy, yellow is the color du jour.

How to Wear Yellow

Yellow is great for girls’ summer dresses, boys’ and girls’ tops and certain accessories. In an outfit, keep yellow “on top” – in other words, avoid yellow pants. Stay away from pairing yellow and black; it can look too bee-like. Yellow and white is tricky but doable. The key is to be sure the two colors are different textures. Yellow and white in two soft fabrics is too Easter egg, but there are chic options here: wear white denim jeans with a gauzy yellow chiffon top, or pair a yellow linen dress with a sequined white cardigan.

To put yellow with other colors, try brown or gray. Both look pretty and sophisticated. A yellow dress with a brown or gray cardigan is one way to wear the trend, as is a yellow shirt with brown or gray pants or jeans.

Kids’ Yellow Clothes

Ella Moss’s children’s line offers the Abbey Flower Bubble Top, in a soft yellow deemed “lemonade”. The spaghetti-straped top has sweet floral cutouts along the neckline ($63, Bloomingdale’s).

Ralph Lauren Childrenswear has a long-sleeved striped Rugby shirt for boys. Made of cotton, the shirt has thick yellow and baby blue stripes, along with the signature pony logo on the chest (Bloomingdale’s, $49.75).

GAP Kids’s Beach Graphic Dress is printed with a slightly deconstructed yellow sun graphic (as well as some blue ocean near the bottom). The look is very summer, made of terry cotton and with a halter tie in back (GAP Kids, $26.50).

Teen/Tween Yellow Clothes

Teen-friendly brand Candie’s has an embroidered ruffle babydoll dress in the Junior’s department on kohls.com ($40.60). Besides the bright yellow color, the dress incorporates other summer trends with its slight ruffle and white floral embroidery.

Another babydoll dress is Necessary Objects’s flirty Tiered Knit Minidress. This dress is a soft, pale yellow with a (not too low) scoop neck and thick straps (Nordstroms’s Juniors department, $48).

Lush Juniors has a long, slightly flowy Banded Tank, in a color it calls “sunshine”. The length and looseness is flattering with fitted pants (Nordstroms’s Juniors department, $32).

Accessory Tips

Candy-colored shoes are “in” at the moment, but while bright yellow shoes may look fun and appealing in the store, they can be difficult to coordinate with an outfit. Unless there’s an irresistable cheap pair, avoid the expense.

Opt for a yellow bag. Try a yellow tote for a sunny summer look, or find a classy yellow clutch.

Summer calls for sunglasses. Forever 21 is a mecca of inexpensive sunglasses, most ranging from $5 to $7, many available in yellow.
