Winter styles are useless in the warm back-to-school months of September and October. Shop in summer instead.
Wandering the stores for back-to-school shopping can be a frustrating experience come late August, when all items seem to be black or brown and made of heavy materials such as wool and velvet. The trouble is, the weather is still warm in September and October, making it impractical to wear fall styles yet.
One solution is to think in advance. Shop while summer clothes and accessories are still in stores and on sale. Not only are the clothes usually less expensive, but they can actually be worn in the early fall months.
Travel to Shop, Shop to Travel
For those taking a vacation, a city away from home (whether domestic or foreign) is a perfect place to look for different styles. Buying a dress or bag in a boutique or vintage shop somewhere other than home ensures that no one will have the same item. And choices are often more unique than what’s offered at the local chain store.
To stay focused, make a list of desired purchases before leaving. This can be anything from a new dress to jewelry, a bag or a pencil case.
Instead of a traditional backpack, a tote bag is an excellent way for a child or teen to carry their books and other gear to and from school. Tote bags are very popular and easy to find in the summertime. Look for a tote that’s sturdy, roomy and has inside or outside pockets to keep things organized. A bright pattern is fun and shows less dirt. Search independent stores in different cities for tote bag options, or try one of Madewell’s bright soft leather totes ($198).
Dresses for Dances, Parties
Once school begins, there will be occasions to dress up, from dances to holiday parties. Buying a dress in the winter season can be expensive and variety can be limited. Shop now for dresses; summer offerings are more affordable and just as flattering. White and madras may look a little too “summer”, but otherwise, most colors and patterns can be worked in any season. Look for a dress that can be paired with tights and a sweater. The sweater can be purchased later if the child or teen wants to keep up with the trends. A pink or blue dress can be paired with black tights and a sweater. Or shop now for one of the many sequined dresses that are in stores. These glitzy creations will look perfect in December and winter.
Purchase flats now, before winter heels take over stores. Colorful flats that look perfect in summer can be just as fashionable during fall and winter. Plus, flats are cute and easy to wear to school. For children, check out Crewcuts; teens can browse London Sole.
