How to Adapt Summer Clothes for Winter 2009Spring and Summer 2008 Fashion Trends Have Potential for New Outfits
Last season's trends can be adapted for fashionable winter looks.
It’s a familiar fashion occurrence that spring and summer clothes get pushed into the back of the closet when winter arrives, not to be seen again until April or May. However, with household budgets continuing to limit the amount of new clothing purchases, as well as temperatures rising around the globe, it doesn’t make sense to ignore last season’s buys. Instead, it’s time to find ways to continue to wear these clothes – it’s the financially conscious thing to do. Spring/Summer 2008 Trend: Little White DressWinter 2009 Version:It seems like every woman bought one (or more) white dresses last season, following the trend of Philip Lim. Fashion shows are already showing similar styles for next spring, but in the meantime, there are numerous ways to “winterize” the dress. By adding dark accessories, such as nubby gray tights, a wool or cashmere sweater, or coat in colder weather, the white will look fresh but not too summery. A dark denim jacket also does the trick. Most white dresses are probably made of cotton or linen. Play up a pretty white-on-white palate by adding clothing pieces with texture, such as a white sequined or faux fur-trimmed sweater. This can be a day time look, or jazzed up for a party with additional accessories such as glittery silver jewelry, a metallic or sequined clutch bag (don’t use sequins again if the sweater has sequins), and metallic shoes. Spring/Summer 2008 Trend: Lightweight scarvesWinter 2009 Version: Lightweight scarves were everywhere during the summer, available in floaty fabrics and bright, bold prints. Although they don’t have much of a purpose in winter (though, really, they didn’t have much purpose in summer, either), they can still be utilized to make an outfit extra pretty. In place of a belt, tie a scarf through the belt-loop of a pair of pants or jeans. Since most winter pants are made of heavy fabrics and dark colors, the scarf will serve as a fun pop of color. Spring/Summer 2008 Trend: Sheer shirtsWinter 2009 Version: Sheer shirts are the perfect clothing item to wear over skimpy summer tank tops, but they can still be part of a cute outfit during the winter. Instead of the sheer shirt being the outer layer, consider it one of many layers: tank top, sheer shirt, thick sweater (or layer two thinner sweaters in varying colors.) The sheer shirt will add color or pattern without adding bulk. Spring/Summer 2008 Trend: BrightsWinter 2009 Version: Bright colors, especially yellow, were in abundance last season. The good news is that brights look extra flattering with darker colors. Pair yellow with brown, bright pink or lime with navy or black, and sky blue with darker blues or black. Deep purple, a big color trend this fall and winter, can also compliment just about any bright color. But be sure to keep a minimal color palate for accessories to avoid a Crayola Box effect.
