Costume ideas that will please both tweens and their parents.

Halloween can be a tricky time for “tween” girls. By that age, gone are the days when the #1 costume choices are a fairy princess or a cuddly tiger. However, girls between the ages of 11 and 13 still routinely dress up for Halloween, whether to take younger siblings trick-or-treating, attend a party or simply wear their costume to school.

Tween girls long to appear older than they are, coveting costumes along the lines of French Maids or sexy kittens. Parents, however, don’t have to approve of these choices. There are other costumes that can satisfy a tween’s desire to dress up with a parent’s desire for their girl to remain age-appropriate.

Flapper (1920s girl)

A flapper is a fun costume that appeals to a tween girl’s idea that Halloween is now a time to be pretty and a bit provocative, yet the costume itself doesn’t have to be revealing.

A “flapper” dress can be purchased at costume stores or via catalog, often these are sleeveless short dresses in a bright color, such as red, with fringe on it. But another option is to find any 1920s-style dress to wear as a costume. Tween girls generally have an ideal “flapper” body – boyish and straight.

Accessories to complete the look include long necklaces, red lipstick and stacked or flat shoes. If it’s cold weather, a coat with fur is very 20s-inspired. Bobbed hair is a flapper must – if hair is long, simply roll up to mimic a bob. Or cover hair with a fitted cap or “cloche” hat.

Geisha

Dressing like a geisha has become popular in the last decade, from books such as Memoirs of a Geisha and Asian-inspired looks on the runway. Look for a geisha costume at a store, or elsewhere for a kimono – even a beautiful, flowered robe can do the trick.

A geisha is a fun costume to wear and tween girls will feel pretty and sophisticated. The makeup is specific – the face and neck should be covered in white makeup, with a red top lip and red lipstick just in the bottom center. Eyes are lined with dark liner, but don’t wear colored eyeshadow.

Hair should be rolled up and secured with chopsticks. A good accessory to carry is a paper fan, found at any party store.

Genie

Girls like wearing genie costumes since they’re often made with a lot of gauzy fabric and in pretty colors such as pale pink or mint green. Some genie costumes have longer tops or false flesh-colored panels across the stomach so that girls aren’t really exposing their midriffs.

To complete the look, wear a pair of pointy shoes – or shoes with a little “puff” of fabric on them will do the trick. Secure hair into a high ponytail and tie with a scarf. Accessories can vary, but try big jewelry.

Ideal makeup is false eyelashes and ruby or pink lipstick.

Although i am no longer a tween i remember how hard the halloween costumes were to put together and stuff. A really cute idea is a sexy mini mouse. wear like a red and white polka dotted dress with a black little vest on top and get the ears and some knee highs that u can put little red bows on. Affordable and adorable.

First of all, you guys do know what a geisha is, right? So, yes it's pretty, but i can see why your mom wouldn't want you to go as it, because theya re basically a prostitute- sorry but true. Second, some cute ideas i've seen done, that aren't dorky, or too sexy are dragon girl- either buy or make wings out of wire and tissue paper and glitter, then you wear all grean, black, or red and you put green ribbons in your hair. The only time my parents let me wear make-up was on halloween- so if your parents let you you could put some make up on to match the outfit. I've seen it done where it was really cute-not dorky or little kidish. another idea i've seen is the corpses bride idea, if you could find a cheap white or grey dress maybe an old one you have (if any one actually has one) tear it in places (if possible), put white and black makeup on your face if you are allowed to wear make up, but if not it's not the end of the world the costume will still work. then make tissue paper butterflies to stick in your hair, and maybe some black ribbons in your hair also. carry a bouquet of dead flowers. hope this helps.

i am a father looking for halloween costumes online with my 11 yo daughter. we both think some of the comments posted on here are quite mean spirited. she wanted to be a flapper but now she is worried that her schoolmates will think she looks like a baby. Do you girls know what a flapper is? they were the most popular and youthful and sexy young women of the jazz age. and geisha are japanese most desired women! i went to a costume party a few years ago and half of the ADULT women were dressed as geisha so maybe these costumes arent too young for you but simply too mature

I am 12 and found a really good idea and not to showy or sexy it is a flash back dancer
List of things you'll need:

*Vibrant and colorful colors!

pantyhose
leg warmers
ballet shoes
shorts
leotard
a T-shirt you don't use anymore cut in half or 1/4 off
head sweat band
purple or blue eye shadow
red lipstick or lip gloss
light pink blush
Voila!
*sweep ponytail to side of head for ultra cute look!
not bad at all and maybe add gaudy jemelry too make it fun

I'm a little older than a tween but feel like my halloween years are almost up. I'm looking for some good final costumes, and I've already been all of these things....anything else? My mom wants me to be a ladybug (ummm no) Some help for good tween costumes, (ones that I have been) cute bumble bee is good, Vampress is very good (kinda of like vampire's wife except in a gothic looking dress), belly dancer is a good one because you can get the cool jingly wrap around your hips. And a good group one is the Cullen family from Twilight (although there may be controversy over who gets to be Bella)... Hope i was of some help. Enjoy your last years :)

Mmm well these are lame no offence.I am allowed to wear my choice of costumes because im 14.But last year I had a really cute, not too revealing costume.
I was a football player.
I wore my little brothers old jersey that came up a few inches above my belly button, with a sports bra underneith.Gold football pants(cause our colors are black & gold), a pair of tall gold socks, and a pair of black stilletos to wear to our costume swavey. It was very cute and I fit in at the high school party I was at perfectly.
So even if your a tween, that doesnt mean you cant have a sexy costume. You just have to make it sexy in an appropriate way. Wear dark eye shadow(but not too much),Something that shows off a little skin, and some heels(:

i am 16 almost 17. and this year my friend and i are going as flappers.
we like the classic sophisticated looke of a dress with elbow gloves, feather, PEARLS, and the heels.:)
we dont find this costume a bit childish at all.
and in my opinion if a tween dont want to look childish they shouldnt act childish; its not the costume that makes them look like that. :)
this costume is a great idea.

me and my friend this year
were an oreo cooke and milk carton
it was SO simple to make
we used carboard, spray painted it black, and wrapped the milk carton up with white paper
we won our school costume contest!

Come on girls; I'm a mum of two tweens and I am proud to say they march to their own drums. Although they want to look good they understand modesty and have their OWN opinions. Be strong and try not to give in to peer presure. Tweens is a tough age group, confusing for kids and parents. Take your time with this stuff and just be a kid! My girls have gone as mermaids, pirate chicks, greek godess and genies and have always got great reviews. Be careful not to go too far with trying to be an adult cause that can look REALY bad!

hi, i think the flapper could be very sexy if you wish it to be, depends on how you carry it off, red lippy, feathers in your hair with a sequin band around your head, maybe one of those cigarette holder things. Genie is great. Could always go as a circus performer......put on your best dress and make a fake fur beard with elastic on it and go as a bearded lady.....you can always take it on and off if the need to be "Cool" arises. A sparkly leotard(get handy with craft glue or sew sequins on in funky patterns) and some hoola hoops and your a contortionist( very flexible gymnist) . I mean old school style circus.
Get creative with every day clothes.....if you find an old suit cut it down and be a ring master or a zombie.....could always leave the suit very large and you could be the victim of a shrinking ray lol :). Dress all in black (a black blazer would be perfect) and some toy guns and get creative with an old belt and you are a secret agent. Add bullet holes and blood if you wish. Shove a toy dog in a purse, dress any way you like and go as Paris Hilton. Get creative girls.....i remember being a tween,it is a hard time just know that anything you choose will perfect if you stand by it 100%, that means if ppl say u look like a dork....then be one....be the biggest, loudest dork you can be......i can assure you that you'll have alot more fun than the girls dressed only to impress others. Plus you'll make them green with envy that you don't care and are having a laugh.

1: what is a flapper? It sounds like a chicken. 2: What's a geisha? I want to dress up like a genie from an old show I watch, but my Dad won't let me, though my mom's all for it. How can I dress like her without my dad telling me to wear a huge jacket? Help me out, she looks awesome, it's either that or a bunny. PLEASE!!!

The flapper idea is good, depending on how well you pull it off. If you wear too bright colors then it can look a little odd but if worn correctly it can look good. The other two.....

i am a tween,11 going on 12, and am having difficulty finding a costume, that i would wear to school, feel confident in, and be able to have fun in. some costumes i have found are a pirate cutie at party city, and there are some very cute bee costumes out ther. they're short and cute. if u want a homemade one do this: get a black tutu, a yellow and black shirt, black leggings, wings, and black converse. you'll be able to move freely in it and still look good. if this is too costumey, ditch the wings but add a headband, and instead of a tutu, a black skirt will work just as well. really hope i helped!!!

I am going in the 5th grade and I can't think of a single costume. Every year i go to the townshhip fire house for the scary house and they always have a costume contest and i never had the guts to enter but my friend won last year so i want to enter this year and win but I can't think of a single costume that would win so i have been searching every hallowen catolog we get to see the costumes. I really want a cool costume and a kind of scary costume but i want one that will win. i am freaking out because we need to order them soon so we know we get the right sizes and that they fit. I have a little bit of an idea it is a pirate cutie. it is really cute but it isn't really scary and that is one thing i am looking for i a costume.

I'm a tween and I think these costumes are HORRIBLE!!! I just turned twelve and I'm already going with the teen costumes on partycity.com (everything there is great!). A flapper is SOOOOO like 1920's, a genie is a little too much like Jasmin from Aladdin, and a geisha? Are you kidding? Geishas are for losers. Offense ment to the people who wrote these ideas.

Hey! im 13 and i think a flapper would be cute..but, uhh yah, im not boyish and straight! my bra size is 38 C and i wear a size 4..and i really dont think most girls around my age are "boyish and straight" so yah..just sayin'..... me and my freinds dont want to be sexy tho..im sooo friggen tired of all thease little kids walking around, looking like sluts! its disgusting! im also sick and tired of people who feel the need to buy costumes. like really?? are you that lazy, and unoriginal, that you have to buy a costume?? i always hand make mine, and come up with the ideas myself. its always unique and fun, and it impresses everyone. this year im being Ed McMahon and walking around with a publishers clearing house check (made of a foam board, and steady hand with a sharpie), and some balloons. :) its gonna be alotta fun! i urge you all to make your own costumes, and come up with a fun idea this year! its amazing all the compliments you get, and the way you feel on halloween night knowing that this costume was all your own, and very unique! :)

I'm also a tween, and I'm not sure what to go as, I'm going trick-or-treating with my younger sister this year, and I'm looking for costumes that aren't that expensive, even if I have to make it myself, If I can't find one I do have to back-up options but I'd prefer something a little different then my soccer uniform or my kimono. Any suggestions?

none of these ideas are very good. ): at school there is a lot of social ranking and girls espiecially find it hard to find a costume that isnt to baby0ish or to sexy and revealing. my ide is to be able to make a costume from bits and pieces around the house and pick up stuff cheap from the shop. as people have said costumes are so expensive! somebody help!!!
gothic fairy?
pirate? (those are quite tricky :S)

Hello,I am 11 1/2, and I have a really cute and unexpensive idea for a costume. A JELLY-BELLY BAG!!!!you'll need:
A trash bag (preferably white)
Face paint
multicolored balloons
a sign that has the jelly-belly logo on it. Wear the trash-bag as a dress, blow up a few balloons and tape them around your head. Then paint you face the color of your choice.

try a vampire. they can look super good if you make the costume your self out of a black dress that can be tight if you want and maybe use an awesome cape. you can easily pull it off with some red lipstick. and you can make it really funky

I am 11, and I thought the "Flash" girl costume at Target.com was really cool!! It's red, and comes with an awesome dress. Also, it makes you look a bit older than reality, without trying to look 21. And superhero costumes are a really chic, easy way to go trick-or-treating, or to a party.

I am a tween and really frusterated. Adults just don't understand you can't be a devil each year and keep recycling the same costume! My mom lives in the 80's when costumes used to be 15 bucks. Now, the average price for a costume is at least $301 What do I do?

I am 14 but still have a tween body, and trust me, at todays standards, unless you're going for that "I'm clueless as to see how ridiculous and childish I am." look, most will look down on what your wearing. Because of my small chest, I'm trying to find very appealing costumes that both my friends, foes, and family will like (or be envious of.) Try updating your sources a little, because these absolutely unacceptable.

Some people say that these are bad ideas, while others say they aren't. I know that the people that say that these aren't were either able to fit into adult costumes (which look A LOT nicer than the children's costumes) or really haven't understood that people of higher powers are going to critize them harshly. Please do consider the risk of be looked on as the lowest person in the food chain, and try other ideas before you try these.

Hey y'all! It's the costume challenged tween who wrote about the bumble bee costume and the hunter costume. Here's a few more ideas: you could be Alice in WOnderland or you could be a Raggedy Ann doll. I think these are unique ideas and i don't think anyone else will be wearing these at a costume party, costume contest, or just family trick-or-treating. If you can't decide what to wear, wear one outfit to school (if you're allowed) and when you go trick-or-treating/halloween party/costume contest you can wear another costume. Seriously, hope I helped this time. Also, if y'all could comment on this comment and also tell me which costume you think would be better. Thanks!!!!

Ok I'm 13 and I was a flapper for halloween in 3rd grade! And a genie?? seriously? That's just plain stupid! I'm being the tooth fairy for halloween this year. Last year I was a jester, the year before that a clown, and the year before that a mime! The mime was the best one though. Those were my best costumes. DON'T BE A FLAPPER! I was it once, and it only spells one thing: DISASTER.

No offense to you guys but, that is rude! Just because you don't like this person's ideas doesn't mean that you can say "i wanna look good, not like a gay person from the 1800!!" that is mean! and BTW the only costume that might be from the 1800's is the Geisha.

I'm a tween and my halloweening days are almost over. My BFF and I are going trick or treating together again but I can't ask her for advice; she's in the USA! But she already told me she is being a goth but I cannot imagine myself as a goth AT ALL! These ideas are not my type of costumes and I have been a witch EVERY YEAR!!! I was thinking about being a person who'd been beat up then murdered but then again...
I think I might be a witch for the halloween disco at school on tuesday then a bee for trick or treating on halloween but if anyone has better ideas i need some ASAP! But I won't use skirts or dresses. I very rarely wear skirts and dresses. I'm into jeans and joggies. So I'm between girly girl and tomboy. I need ideas ASAP!!! Thanks for ideas.

-three peas in a pod
-toothbrush and toothpaste
-hanah montana, and the other person is miley stewart/cyrus. (as a joke
-pick one!

WTF? Nothing even slightly cool? >.>. Well, that sucks... I got a few ideas though ;). I could be one of those freaky dolls that look like they're gonna murder you! (Maybe I'll add some blood... make up of course.) It'll be semi cute, but have a scary element! I have the gothic dress, white tights, I'm pale as crap, and I have ringlets for hair! Awesome. Well, this helped me a little bit. Thanks ;).

i wish i had a lolita styled dress just google it!
lolita fashion style is all about looking modest and there are different styles too like goth lolita, sweet, gore (recommended for halloween) and you look cute like a doll! dresses are about knee length!
