There is a skin care regime for every teen, regardless of budget and skin type.

Fall, with the start of school and numerous new activities, is the perfect time for teens to find a skin care regime that works for them. The good news is that there is an endless number of easy-to-use products for every budget and skin type.

Best Speciality Store Skin Care – MD Skincare

MD Skincare, by New York City dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross, is a line of products designed to “renew and maintain” skin. There’s a product for every skin type, from oily to dry, yet all are sensitive and gentle.

One of the standout products is the Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel, a two-step process (two sets of circular pads to wipe on skin) that exfoliates and then soothes skin, while shrinking pores and eliminating redness.

A set of 30 applications is currently being sold with the Hydra-Pure Radiance Renew Serum for $95. A container with 60 applications is available for $125. Though MD Skincare products are more expensive than drugstore finds, in the long run, money is saved because the products continue to work well – no more buying a new cleanser or toner every other week.

There are two cleansers available, one gel (better for oily skin) and one foam (perfect for dry skin). The endless list also includes products for eye, face and body – as well products that treat rosacea and acne. The Correct & Perfect Spot Treatment, $28, quickly rids skin of blemishes without any lingering dryness. Don’t be fooled by the small tube – a little goes a long way.

MD Skincare is available at Sephora and on the MD Skincare website.

Best Special Order Skin Care – Proactiv Solutions

Many drugstore products have copied Proactiv’s 3-step system, which includes a cleanser, tone and repairing lotion. The purpose of Proactiv is to eliminate acne, while cleansing and evening skin tone. The system was created by dermatologists Dr. Katie Roden and Dr. Kathy Fields.

The system, which is available only through mail order (their website), generally costs about $39.95 every two months, though users can determine how often they want the products to be sent (for example, when this writer was a teenager, she routinely found that the toner ran out more quickly than the other two products). There’s also a 20-day introductory packet for $19.95.

The 3-step system aren’t the only Proactiv products. Their list of products include a refining mask, green tea moisturizer, daily oil control and SPF. When Proactiv users sign up for their Clear Skin Club Membership (free membership when ordering the Proactiv system), they get full access to the rest of Proactiv products, including body products, makeup (such as face powder) and blotting papers.

Proactiv can be found on their website.

Best Drugstore Skin Care – Clean & Clear

The catchy commercial slogan – “clean, clear and under control” doesn’t lie. Clean & Clear, which is to be found in any drugstore, offers hard-working products for fair prices. Although teens must determine which brand of products works best for their individual skin, Clean & Clear is good one to start with because their products are made for all skin types and aren’t harsh. Their products also target typical teen complaints such as acne, clogged pores and blackheads.

They have an extensive list of cleansers, some that target specific issues, others that simply cleanse and remove make-up. Their Foaming Cleanser, for instance, leaves a fresh, tingling feeling while cleansing skin.

Their line also includes moisturizers, toners, treatments and sun protection; all these products are available in different strengths (example, some for intense acne; others for occasional breakouts.)

More information about each product can be read on their website.
